Marken
Situated just 20 km northeast of Amsterdam, this picturesque village is home to beautiful brightly colored traditional wooden houses.
If you're a movie fan and have watched Big Fish, Marken might remind you of Spectre village, although the architecture is very different.
Marken is extremely idyllic, so much so that sometimes it seems like a film set instead of a real village.
What to do in Marken?
Once an island in the Zuiderzee, Marken is very small with less than 2,000 residents. The main attractions of this picturesque village are its typical colorful houses, its well-kept gardens, the farm animals, the port, canals, bridges, and the church. It'll take you very little time to discover it.
How to get to Marken?
The easiest way to get to Marken from Amsterdam is to book an excursion, meaning that you won't have to worry about getting there, and you'll even have a guide who'll show you the main points of interest in the city. You can see all the information and book via the following link:

Like Volendam, Marken is also very easy to get to either by bus or by car (if you rent a car). The buses depart every 30 minutes approximately from Amsterdam Centraal Station
The bus ticket is € 8 (US$ 8.40) and is valid for the whole day, so you can use it to travel to various villages near Amsterdam.
A picturesque village
If you plan to visit Volendam, then we also suggest you take some time to discover Marken. Both villages are nearby and complement each other.
The best way to travel to these sights is to take the bus to Volendam, take a boat to Marken and then take the bus back to Amsterdam.
