Leidseplein
Located in central Amsterdam, Leidseplein is one of the most bustling squares in the city full of restaurants and bars.
The plaza and its surroundings are packed with bars, cafés, restaurants, clubs, cinemas and theatres. Even the famous Holland Casino is located here.
Lively all day long, Leidseplein attracts street artists of all kinds, including jugglers, mimes, fireswallowers and musicians who perform their unique shows for passers-by.
If you want to do a little shopping in Amsterdam, we recommend you head to Leidsestraat, the street that leads to the square. It is full of clothing and accessories stores.
In the past, Leidseplein used to be a type of parking where the horse drawn carriages remained while the passengers walked into the city center.
Architectural jewels
On the square sits the monumental Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre in English), an enormous Neo-Renaissance building built in 1894.
Leidseplein also houses other architectural jewels like the American Hotel, which constructed in 1900, has become one of the most exclusive hotels in the city.
Great area to go out
Leidseplein is one of the best areas to go out at night. You will find all types of restaurants and bars, all of which have enjoyable terraces in summer, perfect to admire the various street shows, followed by fashionable clubs and pubs.
If you’re in the neighborhood, don’t miss wandering to Max Euweplein, very close to Leidseplein. You will always find a group of people surrounding a huge chess board watching a game of chess.
